Bloomberg has reported that D.TRADING, the European trading arm of DTEK, has expanded Ukraine’s LNG import options by delivering its first free-on-board (FOB) cargo of U.S. natural gas to the Klaipeda LNG terminal in Lithuania.
The shipment - around 100 million cubic meters of natural gas from Plaquemines, Louisiana - was loaded onto the Gaslog Houston on 20 October. This marks the first time a Ukrainian private energy company has been responsible for chartering and loading a U.S. FOB cargo.
The new northern LNG corridor via Lithuania provides an additional entry point for gas flows into Ukraine through Poland and the Baltic States. This complements D.TRADING’s existing southern route through Greece, where the company has already transported U.S. LNG earlier this year.
The development comes as Ukraine seeks to rebuild its energy security after recent attacks on critical infrastructure reportedly disrupted more than half of domestic gas production. According to DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko, Ukraine will need approximately 4 bcm of gas imports this winter. D.TRADING is cooperating with European and U.S. partners to secure affordable and diversified supply routes.
D.TRADING is in active negotiations to bring additional U.S. LNG volumes into Europe, with future cargoes expected at both Lithuania’s Klaipeda terminal and Greece’s Revithoussa terminal.
